Spring is a great time to visit Maine. Enjoy pleasantly cool weather and smaller crowds.
Early spring in Maine is what the locals call mud season. Mud season occurs when the top 48" of soil unfreezes and turns to soup. Many a small child has disappeared into the mud soup only to be found again mid-summer. Until mud season ends, hiking is generally out of the question. But if you don't mind staying on the man-made terra firma, catch Maine Maple Sunday, the last Sunday in March when the Sap houses are boiling the Maple sap creating pure sweet gold. Locals crawl out of their winter slumber to attend and stand in line for hot pancakes, fresh syrup and local sausage. Some will browse through the boil house chatting with the master syrup maker as he tends the fire beneath the boiler.
Mid - late spring offers thousands of fragrant apple blossoms, crops of delicious Fiddleheads, and the starting season for overflowing pactches of strawberries. Visit one of the many farms in late spring and summer to sample and take home delicious fruits and vegetables of the season.
Or stop in to one of our local bakeries for some home-made strawberry rhubarb pie, jams, pastries and muffins.
